Sri Lanka boasts of pristine beaches with sun kissed sands. The country has many distinctive beaches all over the country and the colour of the sand varies at certain places of the country. For instance, the Nilaweli beach has a fine white sand while that of the Southern coast eg, Unawatuna has yellow sand.
If you’re planning a trip to this island nation, these are the best beaches in Sri Lanka that you must visit:
The West Coast of Sri Lanka
It is the west coast of the country which has the most development and is mostly frequented by foreigners. The famous beaches which are close to the city of Colombo are that of Mount Lavinia, located south of Colombo and Negombo located towards the north of Colombo. Both are tourist locations.
If you are living in the Colombo city, don’t miss to visit the Galle Face Green. It is a long stretch of beach along with a recreational area, which gather people from the Colombo city limits.
The evenings are filled with children flying kites and families picnicking. There is very tasty ‘isso wade’ and ‘kothu roti’ served along the Galle Face Green at night. These are local snacks, with isso wade being a prawn cutlet and kothu roti being a complete meal made of either roti or string hoppers which is another speciality to the country. Also the ‘king coconut’ is a local orange coloured coconut with a very sweet taste sold along the beach. – A must try!
Negombo and Mount Lavinia have plenty of places to find accommodation from and a range of restaurants and hotels to suit your budget. Negombo beach can get very crowded too, and if you do want to get the experience of how fishermen bring in their boats full of fish, this is a must visit place.
The beach area, I would not say, is very clean as debris of the fishermen is present. It is a very lively place though and has a huge fish market very close to the beach.
Food joints serving good food and alcohol is present. One could give a try on the local wine called toddy, made from the coconut flower, but get the assistance of a known Sri Lankan when venturing to find these.
The west coast has other popular beaches such as Bentota and Beruwala, which are clean and calm. The Bentota lagoon is lined with a string of hotels, therefore it would not be hard to find in accommodation there. Beruwala too has good beaches and is famous for its trade of gem stones too coming from Rathnapura.
The Unawatuna beach is definitely a place to visit and is a popular travel destination for tourists. The beach has a huge stretch for you to sun bathe and is lined by coconut palms. It is very commercial, with sellers carrying, sliced pine apple, toys etc to lure the people. You can find sun bathing stands for rent and is also a safe place to swim.
On the East Coast of Sri Lanka
On the Eastern coast Arugam bay is becoming a popular destination after the war. The area is a popular spot for wind surfing. Though not as developed as the west coast in terms of accommodation facilities, the beach is more pure and peaceful. Nilaweli with its white sands and shallow beach too should be on your cards for a visit.
