The Philippines is one of the increasingly popular destinations for international tourists these days. Whether you consider yourself as a backpacker or more of a luxurious traveler, and if you have the strong desire and interest to visit this Asian country, there are a few things you should know before traveling to the Philippines.
1. There are over 7,000 Islands
Do you know that Philippines is dubbed as the “Treasure Islands of the Pacific”, “Emerald Islands”, “Gems of the East”, and “Orphans of the Pacific”?
Of all the nicknames, “Pearl of the Orient” is the most popular or in Filipino “Perlas ng Silanganan”, which is also found in the first line of the country’s National Anthem. It has several names because of the thousands of islands that are found there.
For the last three years, Palawan was voted as the “most beautiful island in the world”. This province alone is composed of different islets that offer white sand beaches and breathtaking views. Cebu, Bohol, Batanes and the famous Boracay are only a few of the beautiful islands you can explore. That suggests you have plenty of Philippines destinations to choose from.
2. It’s a Nature Paradise
Philippines is a must-visit country for people who love the outdoors. Imagine yourself trekking in an active volcano called Mount Pinatubo, swimming with whale sharks in Sorsogon (skip Oslob please), climbing Mount Pulag, cliff jumping over Kawasan falls, whitewater rafting in Cagayan de Oro, or island hopping around Visayas. All these should be definitely on your bucket list.
3. Almost Everything is Cheap.
From foods to clothes and accommodation to transportation, travelers won’t have any problem regarding expenses. You can go to different places within the country for two weeks for as low as $200 to $500. Seriously, no kidding!
4. It is a Safe, Relaxing Place.
You must have heard the news about foreigners getting kidnapped and just lately the terrorism in Mindanao. There is no denying about what’s happening there but that doesn’t mean that the whole country is in chaos.
While it’s understandable for other countries to ban non-Filipino citizens in entering the Philippines, there are more places that are surely safe to visit. Besides, there are bad things happening in every country, and fear shouldn’t stop you from inheriting the joy of travel. Just make sure to skip the war zone and other areas with red alert.
5. Filipinos are Friendly.
One of the best things about the Philippines is the people living there. They are very friendly, kind and resilient. It’s impossible not to ignore their smiles, hospitality and eagerness to help out. You might even meet one or two who’d invite your for lunch at their home. It’s also not a problem communicating with them as majority of the locals can speak and understand English.
Philippines is not just a destination that feeds your wanderlust and satisfies your adventurous soul, it’s a beautiful, diverse place where you can learn a thing or two. And the memorable experiences you’d have while staying there are worth remembering for years.
